AGARTALA: The culturally significant and picturesque site of ‘Hapong Raja,’ nestled in the Longtharai Hills of Tripura’s Dhalai district, is set to become a major tourist attraction. Known for its spiritual importance and scenic beauty, the site is poised to boost both tourism and the local economy.
Tipra Motha MLA Paul Dangshu recently visited the site with a delegation of tourism officials, engineers, forest officers, and local leaders. The visit was to plan the necessary up-gradation of infrastructure to accommodate the increasing number of visitors. Talking about the importance of the site, MLA Paul said the name 'Hapong Raja, meaning "King of Hills," has deep cultural roots tied to the legendary Unakoti story.
Hapong Raja is home to the revered Shiv Mandir on Longtharai Hill, managed by the Santikali Mission. The temple draws thousands of devotees annually, especially during Makar Sankranti, locally celebrated as Hangrai. Special rituals and offerings are also conducted during Purnima and Amavasya, underscoring the site’s spiritual relevance.
The proposed development plans include the construction of roads, water supply systems, public toilets, and solar-powered lighting. Other features include a watchtower for panoramic views and beautification projects to enhance the visitor experience.
MLA Paul thanked Tourism Minister Sushanta Chowdhury for his support and hoped that Hapong Raja would become a global tourist destination. The proposed modernization will balance the modernity of the place with the site's spiritual and cultural heritage.
As the development work is going on, Hapong Raja will attract more tourists, thus boosting the economy while retaining its cultural heritage.
