AGARTALA: Rameej Ali, a 35-year-old resident of Khaorabil village under Irani police station in Kailasahar subdivision, has been sentenced to life imprisonment with a fine of Rs. 50,000 for the murder of his wife which took place in broad daylight.
Additionally, he was sentenced to three years for domestic violence, also with a fine of Rs 50,000. Both sentences will run simultaneously unless commuted by the high court upon appeal.
According to sources from Kailasahar, Rameej Ali married Roshenara Begum, who was a resident of the neighbouring Dhaliakandi village in May 2019. Initially, the couple lived happily, but as time passed, Rameej began torturing his wife, demanding dowry which her mother, Nesharun Bibi, was unable to provide.
Their relationship had significantly deteriorated, and on January 6, 2020, just six months after their marriage, Rameej Ali brutally murdered Roshenara by repeatedly hitting her on the head with a spade before fleeing the area.
Following the incident, Roshenara’s mother discovered her daughter’s lifeless body and filed a complaint at Irani police station. Rameej Ali was eventually apprehended by investigation officer Aparna Debnath, who filed the charge-sheet on May 31.
During the trial, only two witnesses testified in favour of Rameej, while 22 provided evidence against him. District and sessions judge Sudipta Chowdhury pronounced the sentencing yesterday, finding Rameej guilty of both murder and domestic violence.
