Agartala: Tripura Minister Pranajit Singha Roy on Tuesday revealed that he had urged Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman to release financial assistance for rebuilding the areas devastated by the floods in the state. The floods, which occurred in August and September last year, claimed 38 lives and caused property damage amounting to Rs 14,287 crore.
Singha Roy emphasized that the state had faced its worst-ever floods, resulting in severe destruction to both infrastructure and private property. He mentioned that during the pre-budget meeting with Sitharaman in December, he had raised the matter and sought early release of central aid.
He also highlighted that the state had already spent Rs 564 crore from its own funds to support affected individuals and restore damaged infrastructure.
While the Centre has released Rs 65 crore in two phases from the state’s NDRF share as flood relief, Singha Roy expressed the urgency of further assistance. He also noted that Chief Minister Manik Saha would soon visit Delhi to discuss the matter with relevant officials.
It is to be noted that the Tripura government has approved an additional ₹13 crore from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund, bringing the total flood relief allocation to ₹25 crore.
The funds aim to accelerate recovery efforts in areas devastated by the August 2024 floods, which impacted most of the state's districts. The floods forced families to relocate, disrupting daily life. In response, the government provided immediate relief, including food, medical aid, and temporary shelters.
The newly allocated funds will focus on rehabilitating damaged infrastructure, reconstructing homes, and restoring livelihoods. The Revenue Department will oversee the fund disbursement to ensure efficient recovery.
