AGARTALA: Pradyot Kishore Debbarma, chief of the Tipra Motha Party, gave updates regarding the second round of Tiprasa accord talks held in New Delhi on Tuesday. The discussions highlighted key issues affecting the tribal communities of Tripura.

Speaking to the media, Debbarman said, “We discussed all the issues we raised with the central government. Key topics included land rights, the upgradation of the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC), and the establishment of a central university within the council's jurisdiction. Additionally, ambiguities from earlier discussions were resolved positively.”

He mentioned that a detailed presentation on TTAADC development was made to AK Mishra, Special Advisor to the North East. Mishra directed the state government to draft a comprehensive plan to accelerate development in Sixth Schedule areas. Debbarman also noted that the 125th Constitutional Amendment Bill, which addresses many of their demands, could see progress ahead of the third round of talks expected in late January or early February.

Addressing the controversy surrounding the royal palace, Debbarman clarified that structures such as Chandra Mahal, Golap Bagan, and Manikya Court were private properties, not royal palaces.

“The royal palace is solely used for my accommodation. If the government plans construction on the site, they should consult us. Any sudden change, such as converting the palace for commercial use, could deeply hurt sentiments,” he said.

The discussions concluded on a positive note, raising hopes for further progress in the upcoming negotiations.
