AGARTALA: As the 72nd Plenary Session of the North East Council (NEC) is getting underway, security in and around Agartala has been significantly strengthened. The session is to be held on December 20-21, and it will bring top government officials to the city, including Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Union Minister of DoNER Jyotiraditya Scindia, and all the Chief Ministers, Deputy Chief Ministers, and Governors from the Northeast states.
West District Superintendent of Police Kiran Kumar on December 11 said that in addition to existing security, extra measures are in place, especially in sensitive zones of the city. Fixed barricades have been installed near the Akhaura Integrated Check Post, situated near the Bangladesh border, and regular patrolling has been intensified in these high-alert zones.
Agartala is close to the international border with Bangladesh, which spans 856 km. Thus, security arrangements are all the more important for the session. The police have given assurances that all necessary precautions are being taken to maintain law and order during the session.
This is for the first time that the NEC Plenary Session is to be held at Agartala, a city gradually gaining prominence in regional political and administrative affairs. The security arrangements are commensurate with the stature of the event, which requires strict safety measures not only for participants but also for the people in general.
