Tripura University conducts workshop on women empowerment

Guwahati: Tripura University will introduce gender budgeting at grassroots level for empowerment of women. Gender budgeting which is one of the most important components for budget provisions has always been there but it has been felt that the need of the hour is to incorporate in the system by implementing at the grassroots level.

Deputy Chief Minister and Minister for Finance and Rural Development of Tripura Jishnu Debbarman has inaugurated the workshop and emphasized that women empowerment should start from one's heart.

Speaking on the occasion, Vice Chancellor of Tripura university Professor V L Dharukar has said that women empowerment was given priority in India since ancient time and the present government is also implementing numbers of programme and that it is the first university to implement gender budgeting concept in the university system.

Meanwhile, Managing Director of Chandrasekhar Ghosh emphasized that economic empowerment is the key and important for other components of women empowerment. He further said that women empowerment concept should be practiced from the family itself and should be encouraged in decision-making process.

Director of Women Studies Centre of Tripura University, Professor Chandrika Basu Majumder said that in order to make women empowerment, men should be sensitized.

Dr Jayanta Choudhury, coordinator, Centre for Rural Studies, informed that four numbers of state-level workshops will be conducted for government officials, elected representatives, NGOs, research scholars from all eight districts of Tripura and emphasized on the workshop to percolate gender budgeting and women empowerment issues at grassroots level.

Further, it was mentioned that practitioners and eminent academicians within Tripura University and other Universities across the country and from Bangladesh will share their views in those four workshops.

Women's economic empowerment refers to the ability for women to enjoy their right to control and benefit from the resources, assets, income and their own time, as well as the ability to manage risk and improve their economic status and well being.
