AGARTALA: On Tuesday, a violent clash broke out near Tripura's Pillar No. 47 in Maguruli Gram Panchayat, Kailashahar, in Unakoti District, between Border Security Force (BSF) personnel and Bangladeshi villagers.
The confrontation, which took place in broad daylight, quickly escalated when the villagers attempted to seize weapons from the BSF jawans and attacked them with sharp objects, heightening concerns along the Indo-Bangladesh border.
The incident reportedly began when a group of Bangladeshi smugglers tried to smuggle bidi (local cigarettes) across the border.
Two BSF jawans on patrol snatched them in an attempt to stop the illegal activity. Despite warnings, the smugglers continued, leading the BSF personnel to chase them across the border into a Bangladeshi village.
As the BSF personnel returned to Indian territory, Bangladeshi Border Guards (BGB) arrived to mediate the situation.
However, the sight of the BSF near the border sparked anger among local villagers, who began shouting abuses and eventually launched a physical attack. The villagers allegedly tried to wrest weapons from the BSF jawans and assaulted them with sharp objects.
Eyewitnesses report that one BGB officer tried to shield the BSF jawans from the mob, but tensions flared further when the villagers accused the BSF of firing into Bangladeshi territory and misbehaving with women. The situation became even more volatile as offensive remarks, including religious slurs, were exchanged.
With reinforcements from the BSF arriving, the villagers withdrew. However, the incident has left the Maguruli Gram Panchayat border area on high alert. Both sides are closely monitoring the situation while efforts are being made to de-escalate tensions.
