AGARTALA: A man has been arrested in connection with the tragic death of housewife Malina Nama, who set herself on fire following an alleged family dispute.

A police official stated, “On December 12 last year, Malina Nama took the extreme step after reportedly being insulted and beaten by her brother-in-law Sajal Nama and his wife. The incident took place during a heated altercation at their residence.”

According to the officer, Malina poured kerosene on herself and set herself ablaze in an act of despair. She was immediately rescued and rushed to Anandanagar Hospital, from where she was referred to GB Hospital for advanced treatment. Despite attempts to save her, she passed away from her injuries 13 days later.

Before she died, Malina is said to have told people, “I couldn’t handle the humiliation anymore. That’s why I did this to myself.”

The police launched an investigation based on her statements and the evidence gathered. Sajal Nama has since been taken into custody.

“The arrest is a step toward ensuring justice for the victim. We are committed to uncovering all the facts related to this heartbreaking case,” the officer stated.

This tragic event has started talks about how domestic disputes affect people and the need for early action to prevent such outcomes.

Meanwhile, earlier last week, a 22-year-old woman was found dead in her rented apartment in Pub Sarania area of Guwahati. The deceased had been identified as Esha Bharali who worked as a pharmaceutical professional and was a resident of Biswanath Chariali.

The cause of her death is suspected to be suicide. She shared the rented apartment with her friend who was away during the time of the incident. The reason for her death is still being investigated by the police.
