Bangladesh withdraws port restriction on export of certain goods

AGARTALA, Aug 3: In a positive move the Bangladesh government has withdrawn port restriction on import of certain goods through Akhaura Check Post, four kilometres away from Agartala.

Thirty items on which the restrictions were withdrawn include raw rubber, ful jharu (Broom), bamboo products, CNG parts, stone bolder, beetle leaf (Pan) among others. The Bangladesh government has recently issued a notification withdrawing the restriction. The export-import traders of Tripura through Government of India were pursuing for the withdrawal of the restriction on these items for quite a long time.

An atmosphere of joy is prevailing among the local traders as soon as the report reached Agartala as due to these restrictions they were unable to compete with the Bangladesh traders in equal term. The withdrawal of restrictions will be especially beneficial for the rubber producers and traders of this state as they will get a big market next to their door. Tripura is the second largest producer of rubber in the country but the producers were suffering as their product was not getting market. Ful Jharu, beetle leaf, bamboo products also are in high demand in Bangladesh but local producers could not export these items due to port restrictions. ‘Producers of these items will now get good price of their product’, an official of the Industries department said.

Authority of the Akhaura Integrated Check Post were also encouraged as due to the withdrawal of restrictions, export of goods through this check post will increase and a major part of their unutilized capacity will be used now. At present, trade through this check post has been heavily tilted towards Bangladesh as number of exportable items were very limited.
