AGARTALA: When the State election commission is preparing to hold by-election in all the vacant seats of the panchayat, the CPI(ML) has demanded fresh election in all the panchayats’ of the State.

A delegation of the ultra Marxist party led by its State secretary Partha Karmakar on Saturday met the District Magistrate of Gomaoti district and submitted a memorandum. It also demanded to create an atmosphere so that political parties can work freely. The party will submit similar memorandum to all the district magistrates of the State.

At present over two thousand seats of the panchayats are vacant and the State election commission has initiated a process to hold by-election in these seats as per Tripura Panchyat Act 1993. It has already published draft electoral role for these vacant seats and will shortly declare the election date. Karmakar said the provision for by-election was included in the act to met exigencies like death of any member or resignation or expulsions. He said,”How can such big number of seats fall vacant must be investigated first.”

He alleged these members were forced to resign after the change of the government following huge pressure and intimidations. It is not a normal development. He said to create a proper democratic environment in the rural areas, all the panchyats should be dissolved and a fresh election should be conducted.
