Agartala, July 31 : Regional parties in Tripura including the ruling alliance partner Indigenous Peoples’ Front of Tripura (IPFT) and the opposition Indigenous Nationalist Party of Tripura (INPT) demanded for NRC in Tripura.

Minister for Tribal Welfare Mevar Kumar Jamatia who is also the General Secretary of the IPFT demanded a similar exercise in Tripura as the demographic situation in Assam and Tripura is more or less similar. He said,”We had earlier submitted a memorandum to the Ministry of Home Affairs(MHA) before the assembly elections were held in February. ‘Assam and Tripura have more or less the same situation in terms of demographic balance’, he added.

Indigenous Nationalist Party of Tripura (INPT) general secretary Jagadish Debbarma went one step ahead and demanded NRC in Tripura with 1951 as cut off year. He also claimed thousands of illegal immigrants are living in Tripura and exerting pressure on limited resources here.

BJP spokesperson Mrinal Kanti Deb was far from being concerned with the issue. He said BJP hasn’t discussed anything on NRC revision in Tripura. He also rubbished chances of Assam’s NRC revision impacting Tripura’s demographic balance. CPM State secretary Bijan Dhar opposed any chances of NRC revision in Tripura. He also said there is no possibility of demographic pressure due to Assam’s NRC updation.

Tripura Pradesh Congress vice president Tapas Dey criticised the implementation of NRC revision in Assam saying onus of managing 40 lakh unrecognized people lies on BJP-led NDA government in Delhi.
