Mark Zuckerberg Announces New Community Feature on WhatsApp

CALIFORNIA: Messaging platform WhatsApp has added new features to add to its usability and penetration. These features were released globally today and accessible for all users.

Communities features have been rolled out on the messaging platform globally. The platform will now allow upto 1024 people in a group. New updates will also include in chat poll options for upto 1024 people. Also the video conferencing facility has been added to 32 people. This call feature was announced by the company more than a month back.

"Today we're launching Communities on WhatsApp. It makes groups better by enabling sub-groups, multiple threads, announcement channels, and more. We're also rolling out polls and 32 person video calling too. All secured by end to end encryption so your messages stay private," Mark Zuckerberg mentioned in the launch event.

The parent company Meta had announced the Communities feature earlier this year. It will enable the users and admins to easily and effectively manage their groups as well as to have more meaningful conversations within the group. The company views Communities as a "directory of groups" and everyone can run a community of their own on the messaging platform and then invite multiple groups to join in. But these groups will become a part of the Community only when the admins of the respective group accept the invite.

The key idea behind this concept is to increase the penetration in organizations. Multiple teams can now have their internal messaging within the Community of the organization. This way the teams can interact within themselves as well as with other teams. For example a community of a school can have individual groups for each of the classes.

In order to maintain privacy and personal choices, WhatsApp users will also be able to report abuse, block accounts, and leave Communities as they wish. Phone numbers will be hidden from the Community members.

These new features are part of the goals of Meta to change WhatsApp into a high profit making organization. India being the largest consumer of its services and products, the brand is aiming at profits worth $1 Billion in the next year.
