Assam makes Guinness World Record for largest Bihu Dance
A total of 11,304 Bihu dancers and musicians performed Assam's traditional Bihu dance at the Sarusajai stadium in Guwahati, creating two world records and taking the traditional dance form to the global stage.
The exhilarating Bihu performance made its mark in the Guinness Book of World Records as the largest musical ensemble in one single venue.
The performers were selected from across the state. With 1,400 dancers in attendance, Dibrugarh had the maximum representation while South Salmara, Cachar and Karimganj with 20 dancers each had the least representation.
The selection of the dancers was held from 1 March to 27 March after which district level training were provided to the dancers till 1 April.
The rehearsals for the Guinness Records started 15 days prior to the main event across all districts in Assam under the guidance of Master Trainers.
After primary rehearsals in their respective districts, the Bihu performers assembled in Guwahati on 10 April and carried out their final rehearsal at the Sarusajai Stadium from 11 April.
And on 13 April, around 5:45 in the evening, in the presence of Guinness Records officials 11 thousand 3 hundred and 4 Bihu performers performed for incessant15 minutes on their way to glory and into the Guinness Book of World Records.
Amongst the performers 70 per cent were women and 30 per cent men.
The performers included singers and those playing traditional instruments such as the Dhol , Taal, Gogona, Toka, Pepa and Xutuli.
Remunerations were provided to the performers to help them bear the necessary cost in acquiring the traditional Bihu attire, daily conveyance etc.
According to Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, the event was organized by the Assam government with an aim to "organize the largest Bihu dance performance at a single venue and make it to the Guinness Book of World Records in the folk-dance category".
Authorities from Guinness Book of World Records will hand over the certificates on Friday in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
