Avalanche kills 10, traps 28 trainee mountaineers at Draupadi-ka-Danda at around 5,300 metres altitude in Uttarakhand.
At least 10 trainees of the Uttarkashi-based Nehru Institute of Mountaineering were killed on Tuesday after being struck by a massive avalanche in Uttarakhand's Dokrani Bamak glacier.
Several other mountaineers who were part of a group of 28 are still trapped and rescue efforts are under way to evacuate them. Eight have been rescued. Officials said search and rescue operations have been launched to evacuate others who are still stranded in the crevasses. Besides State Disaster Response Force, Indian Air Force has also been pressed into action to evacuate the injured people. The avalanche has taken place around Draupadi-ka-Danda at around 5,300 metre altitude. Union defence minister Rajnath Singh and Uttarakhand chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Tuesday expressed their grief over the loss of lives due to avalanche.
