4th Asian Kho Kho Championship Begins in Tamulpur

Participants and officials from 10 countries are taking part in the competition.

GUWAHATI: The 4th Asian Kho Kho Championship begins in Tamulpur of Assam on Monday. Participants from multiple countries have arrived in the locality to take part in the sporting event.

The 4th Asian Kho Kho Championship is being organised in the Tamulpur region located in the Bodoland Territorial Region of Assam. The rural setting of Tamulpur was chosen ahead of Guwahati in an attempt to encourage the spirit of sports and games among the rural population of the state. This step also aims to draw the attention of several departments of the central government as well as the sportspersons about the infrastructure and the natural beauty of the natural setting.

Participants and officials from 10 countries are taking part in the competition. These include the countries of Bhutan, Bangladesh, Iran, Indonesia, Nepal, Malaysia, South Korea, Sri Lanka and hosts India. A total of 17 teams comprising of both men and women will be competing from multiple categories of the sport. The Kho Kho Federation of India is the main organiser of the tournament and it has been hosted by the Assam Kho Kho Association with support from the Bodoland Territorial Region administration.

Once known as a violence-hit area, the Tamulpur region of the Bodoland Territorial Region is hosting an international sporting event for the very first time. BTR chief Pramod Boro mentioned, “holding of the international sports event here in BTR has indicated that peace and stability have returned to the region. The championship will help inspire and bring out more sports talent from the rural area. We know that Assam has lots of talent in rural areas.” He also mentioned that the region needs.

Head of the Kho Kho federation and a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party, Sudhanshu Mittal and the assistant high commissioner of Bangladesh in Guwahati, Ruhul Amin also attended the opening event with several other dignitaries.
