GUWAHATI: As a part of the grass root level development programme, Assam Football Association (AFA) is planning to organize State level Youth Leagues for different age group. The leagues will be held in three age categories: U-13, U-15 and U-18.

The new committee of the All India Football Federation (AIFF) has given a special attention on development of football at the grass root level in the country and already instructed its affiliated units to submit their plans. A detail discussion on it will also be held in the first Executive Committee Meeting of the AIFF which is scheduled to be held in Kolkata on September 19.

AFA today conveyed a meeting to discuss and chalk out their plans for grass root level football in the state. The meeting was held at the RG Baruah Sports Complex and it was presided over by its president Naba Kumar Doley. Officials from most of its affiliated units and several top officials of the Assam Football Association attended the meeting.

The treasurer of the Assam Football Association Hiren Gogoi today informed The Sentinel that a detail discussion on how to develop football in grass root level was held in the meeting. It was decided that AFA will introduce Youth Leagues for the age group of U-13, U-15 and U-18 apart from taking a few other measures.

Meanwhile, the next edition of Assam Club Championship will be held in November where the top teams of different districts will participate. Gogoi added: Top eight teams from the Club Championship will qualify for the State Premier League and they will be joined by four more teams. The selection procedure of those four teams will be finalized soon. The champion team of the State League will play in the qualifying round of the I League.

He also said, AFA is keen to promote women soccer in the State and has planned to organize a women's State League which is likely to be held in November.
