Akash Kumar Becomes 7th Indian Male Boxer to Win Medal at World Boxing Championship

The sensational run by Indian boxer, Akash Kumar at the AIBA 2021 men's World Boxing Championship ended with a bronze medal after his heartbreaking loss in the semi-finals held in Belgrade on 4 November. Akash fought against Makhmud Sabyrkhan from Kazakhstan in the category of 54kg and undergo a 5-0 loss.

Akash while playing in his debut World Championship began the last four bouts with full aggression as the initial round saw both Akash and Makhmud trading extremely heavy blows. Makhmud looked for accurate positions with continuous punches that led Akash on the back foot towards the end of the immediate opening round.

In the second round, Akash tried for making his comeback in the tough fight with Makhmud by presenting some of his amazing and brilliant skills to overcome the fight put up by Makhmud Sabyrkhan. The Indian player tried his best to win the battle but failed to match up with the high speed and accuracy of the Kazakh's player Makhmud Sabyrkhan. On following a unanimous decision Makhmud succeeded with victory in the final round capitalizing onto the momentum.

It was the 21st edition of the world boxing tournament where 650 boxers participated from more than a hundred countries from all over the world. As Akash lost the match, the challenge from India came to an end at the boxing event.

The gold medalist from each category in the boxing event will win an amount of $100,000, the silver medalist will receive $50, 000 and the bronze medalist will receive $25, 000. The International Boxing Association will give the winners medals with beautiful designs and belts in order to celebrate their success. Medals that will be given to the winners are originally made up of solid gold and silver.

Akash Kumar is from Bhiwani and he is 20 years old. This medal won by Akash is the 7th medal for India at one of the world's biggest events of boxing that led Akash to join the elite group of boxers. The elite list of Indian boxers that brought medals for the country in past years includes Shiva Thapa who won bronze in the Year 2015 and other bronze medalists are Manish Kaushik in 2019, Vijendra Singh in 2009, Gaurav Bidhuri in 2017, and Vikas Krishnan in 2011. The one who won the silver medal in 2019 is Amil Panghal.
