Sinner cruises through in three sets
LONDON: World number one Jannik Sinner bulldozed into the last 16 at Wimbledon, crushing Spaniard Pedro Martinez 6-1 6-3 6-1 in a ruthless Centre Court demolition job on Saturday.
Martinez looked to be struggling with a shoulder problem, with the trainer twice called on court, but Sinner showed no mercy to complete his third consecutive straight-sets victory at the All England Club.
The 23-year-old has dropped 17 games in his three matches at an average of less than two per set, in an ominous warning to his rivals for the title.
Seventh seed Mirra Andreeva outclassed American Hailey Baptiste 6-1 6-3 under the Court One roof to equal her best Wimbledon run by reaching the last 16.
In a first week littered with fallen seeds, 18-year-old Andreeva has made reaching the business end of the tournament look like a breeze and is yet to drop a set.
She has reached the third round of the doubles too with partner Diana Shnaider, also without losing a set.
Andreeva, the highest seed left in the bottom half of the draw, wrapped up victory two games later and will next meet American 10th seed Emma Navarro.
The eighth seed Iga Swiatek reach the last 16 stage by defeating Danielle Collins of USA 6-2, 6-3.
Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz remained on course for a third straight Wimbledon title after defeating Jan-Lennard Struff in the third round on Friday.
The second-seeded Spaniard secured a 6-1, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory, converting five of 12 break points. He excelled on second returns, winning 34 of 55 points - a key factor in his win.
Alcaraz will next take on 14th seed Andrey Rublev, who eased past Adrian Mannarino 7-5, 6-2, 6-3.
Moreover, top seed Aryna Sabalenka overcame a spirited challenge from Britain's Emma Raducanu, winning 7-6 (6), 6-4.
Trailing 4-1 in the second set, Sabalenka rallied to claim five consecutive games. Agencies
