Assam: Indo-Bangladesh International Handball Tournament Ends

MARIYANI: For the first time, the state of Assam is hosting an international handball tournament between India and Bangladesh.

The competition was flagged off on September 12 at the Nehru Stadium in Guwahati. The final match of the tournament was organised in the Bapuji Stadium in Mariyani of the Jorhat district of Assam.

The Bapuji Stadium in Mariani hosted the tournament in a day-and-night format. Four locations in the state hosted the matches of the tournament. These included Guwahati, Morigaon, Demow and Mariyani. The initiative has been organised to increase the popularity of the sport in the state by the Assam Handball Association.

The final match of the tournament saw the presence of the Assistant High Commissioner of Bangladesh, Dr. Ruhul Amin. Swimmer Elvis Ali Hazarika also attended the event. The team from Bangladesh defeated the team from India in the final match with a good point difference. A cultural presentation was also organised at the beginning of the event which included a Bihu dance by the local artists.

Previously India had lost to Bangladesh by 18-27 score in the opening game of the four-match Indo-Bangladesh Handball Series which got underway at the Nehru Stadium in Guwahati. In the preliminary stage of the game India played well and even took the lead. However, the Bangladesh team came back strongly thereafter and managed to score on a regular basis which helped them register a big win. Earlier a brief inaugural function was held at the same venue which was attended by Assistant High Commissioner of Bangladesh Rahul Amin, president of the Assam Handball Association Amal Narayan Patowary among others.

Earlier this year, the president of the Assam Handball Association Amal Narayan Patowary elected as the vice president of the Handball Association of India during its Annual General Meeting held at Jaipur. Digbijoy Chautala and A Jagmohan will be the new president and the secretary of the association.
