The Nations Games is the largest sports event in India and this year saw the 36th edition of the event since 1920 and it came to conclusion on Wednesday.

GUWAHATI: The 36th National Games of India came to a conclusion on Monday. Assam managed to rank 14th in this sports meet. The Assam team managed to get a total of 28 medals. Out of them, 9 are gold, 10 are silver and 9 are bronze. The state's ace pugilist Lovlina Borgohain bagged gold by defeating Swati from Haryana in the 70-75 kilograms category. Ankushita Boro also won the gold medal defeating her rival Alena Thounaojam from Manipur in 66 kilograms category on the last day.

Like the previous three editions of the sports tournament, the services team were ranked at the top. They won a total of 128 medals in the tournament. Out of which 61 gold, 35 silver and 32 bronze medals were in their tally. Maharashtra and Haryana came 2nd and 3rd in the tournament with a total of 140 ( 39 gold, 38 silver and 63 bronze) and 115 ( 38 gold, 38 silver and 39 bronze) medals in their tally respectively.

Generally organised with a gap of four years, 2022 saw the 36th edition of this sports extravaganza. This edition was supposed to be hosted in Goa in 2020 but got postponed due to the pandemic. The host state was Gujarat this year and the events were organised across the cities of Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, Surat, Vadodara, Rajkot and Bhavnagar.

Around 7000 sportspeople from across the country took part in this tournament. A total number of 36 sports were organised in different categories in the National Games 2022. Some of them were aquatics, archery, athletics, badminton, basketball, boxing, canoeing & kayaking, cycling, fencing, football, gymnastics, golf, handball, hockey and judo. Indian games like kabaddi, kho-kho, mallakhamba and yoga were also part of the competition.

In the 34th edition of the National Games held in 2011 in Jharkhand, Assam had managed the 15th position while it got ranked 10 in the 35th edition hosted in Kerala in 2015.

Each state of the country can send a team for the competition. And one common team comes from the Services category comprising the Defence Services of the country.
