GUWAHATI: Assam’s ace swimmer Elvis Ali Hazarika is preparing to take on one of the world’s most grueling open-water challenges — the Antarctica Ice Mile Swim, slated for February 2026 or 2027. Recognized by the International Ice Swimming Association (IISA), the Ice Mile is among the most extreme endurance swims on the planet.
To complete an official “Ice Mile,” Hazarika will have to swim a minimum of 1.6 kilometers (1 mile) in frigid Antarctic waters at or below 5°C (41°F). The swim must be completed without a wetsuit — only a standard swimsuit, cap, and goggles are permitted — and under stringent safety measures due to the life-threatening risks of hypothermia and cold shock.
Speaking at a press conference in Guwahati, Hazarika shared his motivation and commitment. “As of now, only 54 swimmers globally — 36 men and 18 women — have completed an Ice Mile in Antarctica. I aim to be the first from India to achieve this milestone. It’s not just a physical test, but one of mental resilience and preparation.”
Adding a personal touch to his mission, Hazarika announced he will dedicate the swim to cricket legend and Bharat Ratna awardee Sachin Tendulkar — a tribute to one of India’s most revered sporting icons.
The press conference was also addressed by veteran journalist Pranay Bordoloi, former Junior India cricketer Abu Nechim Ahmed, and noted sports organizers Rajib Prakash Barua and Bhabajyoti Goswami respectively.
