MELBOURNE: Australia defeated India by 184 runs in the fourth test of their five-match test series at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Monday, taking a 2-1 lead in the contest. On the final day, chasing a daunting target of 340 runs, India got dismissed for just 155 runs.

Pat Cummins and Scott Boland were the best bowlers for Australia, as they picked up three wickets each and broke the Indian batting line-up. Even after Yashasvi Jaiswal's innings of 84 runs, the Indian chase fell apart after his dismissal.

The departure of Jaiswal, after a controversial delivery from Cummins, left India's hopes of salvaging a draw in tatters. Other than Rishabh Pant, who made 30 runs, not much was to be said about the contributions of India's middle and lower order. None of the Indian batsmen scored over ten.

India had come out victorious in the first Test in Perth, but Australia leveled the series with a victory in Adelaide. The third Test in Brisbane ended in a draw. The Australians are leading the series 2-1 and the final Test will begin on Friday in Sydney, where India will look to level the series before the tour ends. This marks the first time in 12 years when Australia beat India in a boxing day Test match.
