GUWAHATI: The Secretary of the Assam Badminton Association Omar Rashid, who is also the Joint Secretary of the Badminton Association of India, recently elected as Chair of the Technical Officials Committee of Badminton Asia for the next two years. In an interaction with The Sentinel he revealed his role in the new post and also shared his views on some other issues related to the game. Here is the excerpt.

The Sentinel (TS): Tell us about your new role in Badminton Asia.

Omar: I have to look after the various aspects related to the technical officials of Badminton Asia. Recruitment of referees, line judges etc in various international events including Asian Games will be part of my job. I also have to monitor examinations that would be held from time to time for the recruitment of new referees, line judges and others.

(TS): You have to work for the entire Asia. The job is very challenging!

Omar: Yes. I agree. I shall try my best to produce more and more qualified technical officials from Asia in the coming days.

(TS): Your appointment will perhaps help the Badminton Association of India to produce more technical officials of international repute!

Omar: Actually now I can’t work specifically for a particular country. I have to look after the entire Asia. But yes, I will definitely encourage and guide all of them who will show interest to be the technical officials in the coming days from India.

(TS): You have been associated with the Badminton Association of India for a long period. How do you see the future of the game in the country?

Omar: It’s very good. Indian players have been dominating in the international circuit consistently for the last several years. Under the leadership of our President Himanta Biswa Sarma, Badminton Association of India is working with some specific plans to improve the standard of the game further in the junior categories which will make our reserve bench very strong. I don’t want to take the name of any players but would like to say that right now we have many junior players who are ready to shine in a big circuit with a little bit of international exposure. It’s really a very good sign.

(TS): Assam girl Ashmita Chaliha looks in very good touch…

Omar: Yes. She performed exceptionally well during the recently concluded selection trial for the forthcoming Asian Games. I am happy to see that she booked her berth in the Indian team with a brilliant performance. My advice to her is to keep focus in training and give a good performance in the Asian Games.
