Big Bash League

Cricket Australia launched the Big Bash League in 2011 as a league for Twenty20 cricket dedicated to the Australian franchises. Big Bash League soon replaced the former tournament, KFC Twenty20 Big Bash, and is now composed of 8 city-based franchises rather than the 6 state teams that were previously competing. However, ever since its beginning, the tournament is being funded by the famous KFC, a chicken restaurant. Along with the IPL i.e., Indian Premier League, it is one of two T20 cricket competitions to rank in the top ten national sports leagues for overall attendance. Six of the total eight teams competing have been winners in the event at least once. The Sydney Sixers and Perth Scorchers being the most dominant teams throughout the league's brief existence, with each winning the title 3 times, including two years in a row. Melbourne Renegades, Sydney Thunder, Brisbane Heat, and Adelaide Strikers are four more teams to have won the championship at least once. Prior to 2014, the finalists in the event qualified for the Champions League Twenty20 tournament, which was held annually, involving the best domestic teams of various countries. The Sydney Sixers are current champions, having defeated the Perth Scorchers by 27 runs at the Sydney Cricket Ground on February 6, 2021.

Women Big Bash League

Belinda Clark, a previous women's Test player and the head of Brisbane's Centre of Excellence, had said on January 19, 2014, that plans for a women's BBL were in the initial stages but may materialize very shortly. She added that its idea was being examined because of the significant increase in television viewership during the year 2013–2014 tournament, as well as the growing popularity of women's cricket. Cricket Australia had later confirmed on February 19, 2015, that such a Women's Big Bash League (WBBL) will begin in the 2015–2016 tournament, with teams that are linked with the men's tournament.

The teams will have the same titles and colours as the previous men's BBL teams, thus there will be different teams representing Melbourne and Sydney and while only one team each from Brisbane, Adelaide, Pert, and Hobart. The Sydney Thunder defeated the Sydney Sixers in the debut Women's Big Bash League match by three wickets. The Sydney Sixers, on the other hand, won the second and the third championship of the Women's Big Bash League.

Big Bash League Teams

Rather than the six state-based franchises that previously played in KFC's Twenty20 Big Bash, the league now comprises eight city-based teams. The capital cities of each state each have one team, with Melbourne and Sydney having two. On April 6, 2011, all the teams' names and jerseys were officially unveiled. The Sydney Derby and Melbourne Derby are two of the most well-attended matches in the championship, with supporters looking forward to them. The Sixers and Scorchers have built rivalries over the past years, and their encounters draw large audiences and high television ratings. A single city-based team can have up to 19 players under contract for just a campaign, with only a base of 2 rookie deals and a total of six foreign players, however only three international players can participate in each game from 2020 to 2021 season. In addition, each team may have the highest of two foreign substitute players in the event in case the original foreign players are injured or quit.
