LONDON: England dismissed New Zealand for 132 in the first innings on the opening day at Lord's on Thursday, to make a bright start to their new era under captain Ben Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum. But, in reply, the hosts were 116/7 in 36 overs at stumps.

England's impressive bowling and excellent catching helped them bundle out New Zealand within 40 overs as debutant Matthew Potts picked up 4-13 and took two catches, while veteran seamer Jimmy Anderson took 4-66 on his return to the squad.

Colin de Grandhomme's 42 not out helped New Zealand recover from 39-6 at lunch after their batting order suffered an early collapse. Potts picked up three wickets before lunch -- with New Zealand captain Kane Williamson being his first Test wicket -- and added a fourth later, while Anderson picked up two more.

In England's 1st innings, openers Alex Lees (25) and Zak Crawley (43) put on 59 runs. But after there departure, middle order failed in front of Kiwis' swing bowling attack. Tim Soutee, Trent Boult and Kyle Jamieson took two wickets each. Agencies
