Former hockey player Ibocha Singh dies of COVID-19

GUWAHATI: Renowned sports organizer, former hockey player as well as referee KH Ibocha Singh passed away due to COVID-19 at a city hospital in the wee hours of the morning on Thursday. He was under treatment for nearly 10 days. He was 78 and left behind two daughters.

A resident of Rajbari, Manipuri Basti, Guwahati, Ibocha Singh started his career as a hockey player. Singh, a retired Guwahati Municipal Corporation employee, was the Hockey Secretary of Guwahati Sports Association from 1977 to 1985 and then 1985 to 1989, besides being the Football Secretary of GSA from 1990 to 2000. Singh, a Life Member of GSA, was also the Joint Secretary of the association from 2004 to 2012 as well as the General Secretary from 2012 to 2014.

A state-level football and handball referee, Singh was a Governing Body Member of the Assam Football Association, besides holding the position of the Treasurer of the Assam Badminton Association from 1991 to 1993.

Various sports organizations of the State condole the demise of Singh. The Assam Olympic Association deeply expressed sadness on the his demise. In a message, President of AOA SarbanandaSonowal and Secretary LakhyaKonwar said that the sports field of the State lost a guardian.

The Assam Cricket Association expressed profound sorrow over the his demise. President of ACA RomenDutta as well as Secretary DevajitSaikia condole the death of noted sports organizer. ACA stand with the bereaved family of the deceased in this hour of sorrow, and prays for the eternal peace of the departed soul.

Veteran sports organizer and President of the Guwahati Lawn Tennis Association (GLTA) Kalyan Kumar Das, in a condolence note, described in Singh's passing away the State lost a real sports organizer.

On behalf of the Veteran Cricket Association of Assam (VCAA), President Naba Konwar and Secretary NasirGul Khan expressed deepest sympathy and pained by the passing away of Singh.

In a condolence message, Secretary of Assam SepakTakraw Association Bishnu Ram Nunisa conveyed deepest condolence to the bereaved family and pray that the Almighty God grant them courage and that the departed soul rest in eternal peace.
