French Open: Pliskova survives Andrianjafitrimo scare

PARIS: World No.2 Daniil Medvedev breezed past Argentine Facundo Bagnis 6-2, 6-2, 6-2 for a hassle-free opening round at the French Open here on Tuesday.

The 26-year-old returned from a two-month break to recover from hernia surgery last week in Geneva and looked comfortable on Tuesday during his one-hour 38-minute victory over world No.103 Bagnis.

Danish teenager Holger Rune swept aside 14th seed Denis Shapovalov in straight sets to earn his first win in a Grand Slam tournament and confirm his status as one of the sport's brightest prospects.

The 19-year-old, who won his maiden tour title in Munich this month, powered past the Canadian world number 15 with ease, winning 6-3, 6-1, 7-6(4) and showing no nerves.

Karolina Pliskova came from a set down to beat wildcard Tessah Andrianjafitrimo in the first round, while Jelena Ostapenko and Danielle Collins raced through in straight sets.

No.8 seed Czech Pliskova had to come from a set down to beat surging wildcard French player Andrianjafitrimo 2-6, 6-3, 6-1 in 2 hours and 3 minutes to reach the second round of Roland Garros.

Advancing more straightforwardly were former champion Latvia's Jelena Ostapenko, who defeated Lucia Bronzetti 6-1, 6-4 in 67 minutes while Australian Open finalist Danielle Collins of America, who stormed past Viktoriya Tomova 6-0, 6-4 in 71 minutes.

Third seed Paula Badosa reached second round by defeating Fiona Ferro 6-2, 6-0.

On the other hand, Madison Keys beat Anna Kalinskaya 6-3, 3-6, 6-4, Katie Volynets beat Viktorija Golubic 6-2, 2-6, 6-1, Aleksandra Krunic beat Kamilla Rakhimova 6-4, 6-3, Alize Cornet beat Misaki Doi 6-2, 6-0, Ekaterina Alexandrova beat Greet Minnen 7-5, 6-3, Caroline Garcia beat Taylor Townsend 6-3, 6-4, Mayar Sherif beat Marta Kostyuk 6-3, 7-5, Tereza Martincova beat Shelby Rogers 6-4, 6-3, 11th seed Jessica Pegula beat Wang Qiang 6-2, 6-4, Tamara Zidansek beat Claire Liu 6-2, 6-2, Camila Giorgi beat Zhang Shuai 3-6, 6-2, 6-2, Kaja Juvan beat Oksana Selekhmeteva 7-5, 7-6 (4), Madison Brengle beat Mihaelauzarnescu 6-1, 6-2 to reach the second round.
