Gill’s Historic 269 Rewrites Record Books

LONDON: Shubman Gill on Thursday scored a double century against England during the second Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy in Birmingham. The 25-year-old, newly-appointed captain toppled multiple records on the way to his 269. Gill’s heroics helped India post 587 in the first innings, the side’s fourth-highest in Tests in England.

This was the seventh-highest score by an Indian in Test cricket. Among Indian captains, Gill registered the highest score, going past Virat Kohli’s 254 against South Africa in 2019.

Virender Sehwag holds the record for the highest score by an Indian batter. He had scored 319 runs against South Africa in Chennai in 2008. The flamboyant opener had one more triple century, which came against Pakistan in Multan. Agencies
