AOA distributes Grants-in-aid to Sports Associations

GUWAHATI: Assam Chief Minister SarbanandaSonowal today distributed annual grants-in-aid to District Sports Associations and State Sports Associations which are affiliated to Assam Olympic Association (AOA). The event was held through a video conference.

All 25 District Sports Associations received an amount of Rs 34,800 each while each of the 29 State Sports Associations collected Rs 72,752.

It may be mentioned here that it was the second occasions when Assam Olympic Association decided to stand behind the sports fraternity during the lockdown period. Earlier the association handed over cash incentives to the players who won medals in different national and international championships.

Speaking on the occasion, Sonowal, who is also the President of AOA, said that Assam was going through a very difficult phase with COVID-19 pandemic along with flood, erosion etc. However he urged the sports associations to slowly revive sporting activities in the State.

Chief Minister also appealed to the sports associations to volunteer in the flood relief and rehabilitation activities carried out by the State government as it is the moral responsibility of each section of the society to help in overcoming the challenges.

Meanwhile a new sports competition - Grass Root Olympics - will be introduced in Assam once the state recovers from COVID-19 pandemic. Announcing the news Chief Minister said, "We need to identify and develop the talents and that too in the early stage. This competition, which will be extended to all tea gardens and Panchayat areas, will bring a very positive impact in the sports scenario of the state."

General Secretary of AOA LakhyaKonwar, Vice President BishnuramNunisa and AOA member PronoyBordoloi were also present during the video conference held at the official residence of Chief Minister.
