GUWAHATI: The 22nd National Para Swimming Championship will be held at the Zakir Hussain Aquatic complex in the city from November 11. The two-day meet will be organized by the Paralympic Association of Assam in association with Udayachal & Sneha Bhandan.
Addressing a media gathering the chief patron of the Paralympic Association of Assam Riniki Bhuyan Sarma said that around 550 participants from 29 states will participate in the championship which will be held in the city for the first time. She also expressed hope that the competition would help to promote the sports activities among the differently abled children in the state.
The media briefing was also attended by the convenor of the organizing committee and joint secretary of the BCCI Devajit Saikia and secretary of the Paralympic Association of Assam Rajib Dey. Sharing detailed information about the competition Dey said that the meet will be held in sub junior, junior and senior categories and the number of medals will be 210. The president of the Paralympic Committee of India Deepa Malik will also visit Guwahati during the meet and will attend the inaugural ceremony.
Saikia, who was felicitated in the function for being elected as the joint secretary of the BCCI, said that Indian Para Swimming team for the upcoming Asian Para Games and other International Para Swimming Championships will be selected from the forthcoming Championship which Guwahati is going to host.
Regarding the Assam team Dey said that 13 swimmers from the State will participate in the meet and the list included the name of Anowar Sikdar who already qualified for the Asian Para Games and is currently undergoing training abroad.
