New Delhi: 17 year-old international level shooter Khush Seerat Kaur Sandhu allegedly committed suicide by shooting herself at her residence in Faridkot on the morning of 9 December.

She was reportedly unhappy with her recent performances and was in a depressed state as a result of which she decided to end her life.

However, the police said that no suicide note had been found from her. Her family informed the police that Khush Seerat was dismayed by her recent performance in the National Championships which was held in Delhi earlier this week.

"We got a call from the control room about a girl allegedly having shot herself at her residence in Gali number 4 in Faridkot's Harinder Nagar on Thursday early morning. On reaching there, we found the body of 17-year-old Khush Seerat Kaur Sandhu. She had shot herself with her .22 pistol and died of a headshot wound,"  stated SHO of Faridkot City police station Inspector Harjinder Singh.

The incident was believed to have been ocurred on the night of 8 December when the shooter was studying on the ground floor of their house while her family was asleep on the first floor.

After the completion of autopsy, her body was handed over to her family. The police have also launched an investigation in this case.

Sandhu initially started her career as a swimmer but decided to switch to shooting four years ago. She tasted success at the national level winning several medals.

She was also a part of the Indian contingent in the ISSF Junior Shooting Championships which was held in Peru earlier this year.

Her coach Sukhraj Kaur expressed his sorrow and said that she was a talented chap.

This is the second incident of suicide in the shooting fraternity in the last four months. Namanveer Singh Brar, a shooter hailing from Mohali had shot himself at his residence in September this year.

Perhaps providing counselling sessions is the need of the hour. It could turn out to be fruitful for the athletes experiencing a bad phase.
