GUWAHATI: The highly anticipated Indian Premier League (IPL) match between Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) on April 6 will be moved to Guwahati, as local police have indicated that they cannot provide adequate security due to the ongoing Ram Navami celebrations in Kolkata. Snehasish Ganguly, president of the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB), confirmed the decision on March 20, 2025.
BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari announced that over 20,000 processions are planned across West Bengal to mark the festival, further complicating security arrangements. Ganguly stated, “We have informed the BCCI about the need to reschedule the match, but there is no possibility of holding it in Kolkata later. It appears the game will be shifted to Guwahati.”
The match, which was expected to attract a large crowd due to the strong local support for both teams, will now take place in a different venue. An official announcement from the IPL regarding the relocation is still pending.
This is not the first instance that security issues have impacted KKR's home matches; the same had happened during the 2024 season when a game against Rajasthan Royals had also been rescheduled because of Ram Navami celebrations. Ganguly highlighted the difficulty in controlling a crowd of 65,000 without adequate police protection and said, "If there's no police protection, accommodating and managing such a large audience becomes impossible."
