NEW DELHI: Indian fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah was named as the ICC Test Cricketer of the Year 2024 on January 27, after an outstanding performance throughout 2024. In 13 Test matches last year, Bumrah dismissed 71 batters. His exceptional form helped India during key series against England and Australia, both at home and away.

Bumrah started the year strong by taking six wickets in the second innings of the Cape Town Test against South Africa in January 2024. He then claimed 19 wickets in four Tests against England, including impressive performances in Hyderabad and Vizag, where he took six and nine wickets, respectively. His performance in Visakhapatnam earned him the Player of the Match award and also made him the world's No. 1 Test bowler.

In the two-match series against Bangladesh in September-October, Bumrah finished with 11 wickets, and in the early stages of the New Zealand series, he picked up three wickets.

When regular captain Rohit Sharma was unavailable, Bumrah led India in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy opener, taking eight wickets and leading India to a dominant 295-run victory. Bumrah continued his strong form with four wickets in the Day-Night Test in Adelaide and took nine wickets in the third and fourth Tests in Brisbane and Melbourne, respectively.

Apart from his impressive bowling, Bumrah also contributed with the bat, notably scoring 10 crucial runs in Brisbane to help India avoid the follow-on.

Bumrah became the sixth Indian cricketer to win this prestigious award, following Rahul Dravid, Gautam Gambhir, Virender Sehwag, Ravichandran Ashwin, and Virat Kohli. He won the award over strong contenders like Joe Root, Harry Brook, and Kamindu Mendis.
