
GUWAHATI: Assam Athletics Association (AAA) has decided to chalk out an elaborate plan to develop athletics in the state in a very systematic way. As a part of this plan they would identify talent and groom them so that in the future those athletes brought laurels for the state as well as for the country.
Attending an interaction session with the media persons at the Administrative Staff College here today the pres-ident of the Assam Athletics Association Jayanta Mallabaruah said, “Initially we want to identify the talent, spread across the state, and groom them for the future. Our plans also included arrangement of proper training for the ath-letes and coaches, organizing various tournaments etc.”
The interaction programme was also attended by the secretary and treasurer of the Assam Athletics Association Gitartha Goswami, Ritu Baran Sarma respectively and former international athlete Tayabun Nesca.
Highlighting the talent search programme Mallabaruah said,” Khel Maharan, a state wide sports competition of six disciplines, will begin very soon. Athletics, the mother of all sports, will also be a part of this event. We have planned to start the talent search programme from this competition. In this work we will take the help from former athletes, officials of different District Sports Associations and others.”
Several Senior journalists including Balendra Mohan Chakravarty, Subodh Malla Barua, Jayanta Das, Pulin Saha, Partha Chakraborty, Imtiaz Ahmed, Bidyut Kalita, Bipul Barman, Abdul Goni, Dhiraj Das, Pabitra Gogoi (jr) and other took part and also shared their views on how to improve the standard of athletics in the State. Top offi-cials of the Assam Athletics Association today also meet with former athletes, Officials of the various District Asso-ciation, coaches and District Sports Officers to collect input for the same purpose.
Meanwhile the first executive committee meeting of the Assam Athletics Association was held today at the same venue under the presidentship of Jayanta Mallabaruah. The meeting decided to prepare a calendar featuring a year-long programme so that everything can be arranged systematically.
