GUWAHATI: The newly formed Assam Basketball Association (ABA) has chalked out elaborate plans to revive the game in the State. As a part of this plan, the association will organize age-group competitions and also groom the young players by providing them proper training facilities. The decision was taken in the first general meeting of the association in the city today.

Interacting with media persons, ABA president Pallab Lochan Das, an MP from Tezpur constituency, said, “We have chalked out various plans to revive the game and we will implement those plans step by step. Initially, we will start competitions at the age-group level.”

In the recent past, basketball badly suffered in the State as the Basketball Association of Assam, which earlier acted as the parent body of the State, was derecognized by the Basketball Federation of India.

Clarifying the reason behind the formation of the new association of the game, Das said, “It was quite impossible to revive the earlier body due to lapses of different documents which were required for the affiliation. So, the members of various district associations in a meeting recently decided to form a new association to run the game, and the meeting also decided to appeal to the Basketball Federation (BFI) of India to get its affiliation. The BFI has given us affiliation in January, and at present we have 23 affiliated districts units. ”

It may be mentioned here that during the earlier meeting of the representatives of the District Association, a seven-member committee was also formed which included Pallab Lochan Das as president, Anusuya Barua as general secretary and Arup Jyoti Choudhury as treasurer. The other members included Kamini Sarma as working president, Sanjib Handique (vice president), Raj Kumar Das (joint secretary) and Diganta Borah (assistant secretary).
