GUWAHATI: Cricket activities in the state are at standstill due to COVID-19 pandemic since April last and it badly affected the cricketers who failed to get much needed match practice. Keeping it in mind the Assam Cricket Association has decided to organize a T20 cricket tournament from next week which will also serve as the selection trial for the forthcoming Syed Mushtaq Ali Cricket and Vijay Hazare tournament.

Addressing a press conference the secretary of the Assam Cricket Association Devajit Saikia said, "Since last April-May our players didn't get any chance to play matches. So we have decided to organize 1st Assam T20 Challenge Trophy before the start of the season. It will also serve as the selection trial for both Syed Mushtaq Ali and Vijay Hazare tournament."

The Assam T20 Challenge Trophy will kick off at the Judges' Field on September 18 and the final is slated for October 4. Altogether 6 teams-Barak Bravehearts, Manas Tigers, Brahmaputra Boys, Dihing Patkai Riders, Kaziranga Heroes and Subansiri Champs- will participate in the meet. Each team will play 10 matches (Double-leg format) and the top four teams of the group will qualify for the semi finals. All the matches would be broadcasted live on Fan Code platform.

Saikia informed, "The team jersey and logo of the meet would be unveiled during the second Annual Award function of the Assam Cricket Association which is scheduled to be held on September 15 at the Gauhati Town club auditorium. The cash reward of Assam Premier Club Cricket Championship will also be handed over to the district and zonal level winners in the function"

Assam Cricket Association today also announced the coaches and captains of the participating teams in the Assam T20 Challenge Trophy. The complete list: Barak Bravehearts: Dipankar Banerjee (Coach) and Sarupam Purkayastha (Captain), Manas Tigers: Bachan Singh (Coach) and Pallav Das (Captain), Brahmaputra Boys: Salil Sinha (Coach) and Rishav Das, Dihing Patkai Riders: RK Yadav (Captain) and Sibsankar Roy (Captain), Kaziranga Heroes: Dhiraj Goswami (Coach) and Amit sinha (Captain) and Subansiri Champs: Sandipan Debnath (Coach) and Kunal Saikia (Captain).
