Assam Making Good Progress In Boxing: Sarita Devi

Our Sports Reporter

GUWAHATI: Sarita Devi, the ace boxer of India, was in the city recently to take part in India Open Boxing. In an interaction with The Sentinel during the meet she spoke on many areas of her career and the future of boxing in North East. Here is the excerpt.

TS: You are now 37 but still hungry for success. Where does from the motivation come?

Boxing is in my blood and I feel without boxing it is impossible for me to spend a single day. Even during off season I can’t keep myself away from boxing and within two to three days I return to ring.

TS: What about the support from the family?

Oh! It’s huge. My mother was my strength and she always inspired me to improve my performance. I lost her recently and after her death I was not able to concentrate on boxing. However this time my husband stood behind me and takes all the responsibility on his shoulder so that I can properly concentrate in the game.

TS: After a long time you have managed to win a gold medal from an international meet (India Open). Your reaction?

Yes. It’s true. Last time I won gold from an international meet was in SAF Games which was jointly hosted by Guwahati and Shillong. The boxing event was held in Shillong. Thereafter also I was trying hard to win a gold medal from international meets but it was not happening. Finally it came and that too in Guwahati. It’s a very nice feeling.

TS: How do you see the future of boxers in North East?

I feel it is Assam which is promoting boxing in the best possible way in the North East. Already they have organized several international events and also created good infrastructures. Assam, in the recent past, produced several quality boxers and they are regularly bringing laurels for the country. Now other states from the North East are also showing interest to this game. It’s a good sign. What they now need is a few good competitions in their own locality.

TS: You are closely associated with Indian boxing for a long period. What are the major changes you have witnessed?

Current boxers are very lucky. They are getting quality facilities and exposure at the very early stage of their carrier. Our Federation is doing good job. The young boxers of India should use these facilities in best possible way to take the game in next level.

TS: Share your future plans.

Win a medal from Olympics is a dream for me and I will try my best to fulfill the dream during the next Olympics in Japan.
