GUWAHATI: Assam faced another crushing defeat in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, this time at the hands of Haryana in Jaipur on Friday. Haryana secured an 8-wicket victory over Assam, who struggled with their batting once again.
Invited to bat first, Assam were bowled out for a paltry 139 in just 37 overs. Except for Sumit Ghadhigaonkar, Rishav Das and Denish Das (20), none of the batters lived up to their potential. The team experimented with a new opening pair, sending Abhishek Thakuri alongside Rishav Das. However, the move backfired as Abhishek was dismissed for just 3 runs with the team total at 10. Abdul Ajij Kuraishi (0) followed soon after. There was more trouble when Rishav Das had to retire hurt after scoring 30.
Sumit Gadhigaonkar and Denish Das attempted to stabilize the innings, taking the score to 60 before Denish fell for 20. Haryana then made a strong comeback, reducing Assam to 66-7 in no time. Captain Sibsankar Roy, Swarupam Purkayastha, Akash Sengupta, and Mukhtar Hussain were all dismissed without scoring.
Sumit fought valiantly in the middle, scoring 55 off 73 balls, including two boundaries and a six. Rishav returned later but was dismissed for 36 off 77 balls, which included five fours.
Haryana’s bowlers were impressive, with Nishant Sindhu taking 4 wickets for 40 runs and Parth Vats chipping in with 3 for 30.
Chasing a modest target of 140 in 50 overs, Haryana completed the task in 32 overs, losing only two wickets. Mukhtar Hussain provided Assam with a glimmer of hope, dismissing both openers early to leave Haryana at 16-2. However, a solid 66-run partnership between Parth Vats (52) and captain Ashok Maneria (32), who retired hurt, ensured an easy win for Haryana.
This was Assam’s third defeat in the tournament, leaving them at seventh place.
