SILCHAR: Assam Thang-Ta Association, a form of Indian martial arts and culture, based at Lakhipur Khuman in Cachar, organized a four-day long championship which was concluded on October 4 at Sonai.

This was the 15th state level event in which participants from different parts of Assam took part making it all time a different and memorable championship. K Chandra Kumar Singh, organizer convener, said the remote Sonai is proud to host the event.

Some of the participants from the three districts of Barak Valley, Karbi Anglong, Bishwanath Chariali, Lakhimpur, Sivasagar, North Cachar Hills, Dhemaji, Dibrugarh, Golaghat and Hojai demonstrated their martial arts and physical dexterity brilliantly, winning gold or silver or bronze medals, applauded by the audience present during the championship.

MLA of Lakhipur Kaushik Rai graced the inaugural function as chief guest while Reena Singha was present as chairperson of Manipuri Development Council adding a touch of dignity as guest of honour. Dr Rajdeep Roy, MP, further boosted up the morale of organizers and association by being present to draw curtain on the eventful championship on October 4. Apart from all the speeches by members of the Association and the invited dignitaries, Dr Rajdeep Roy was presented a memorandum by Thang-Ta Martial Arts and Cultural Association, Sonai.

The memorandum highlighted that Thang Ta Sports is recognized by Indian Olympic Association which is included Khelo India as indigenous game. The Association has extended its academic units and branches in different districts of Assam. Besides, the Association has been conducting self defence and physical fitness programmes under Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan in different districts of the state since 2008.

This also goes to the credit of the Association that it has been participating in many cultural programmes organized by NGOs, games and sports outfits as well as government agencies on August 15 and January 26. Most important young and talented martial artists are being produced. The MP has been urged upon to exert his good offices for recognition and promotion of Thang-Ta games and sports.
