GUWAHATI: Assam’s swimmers continued their impressive show at the Khelo India Youth Games (KIYG), with Basit Ahmed clinching a gold medal in the 50m breaststroke. The event was held at Gaya on Friday.

Basit delivered a strong performance in the final, clocking 30.46 seconds to secure the top podium finish. This was Assam’s fourth medal in swimming at the ongoing Games. Earlier, Jananjoy Jyoti Hazarika had won two gold medals, while Subhranshini Priyadarshani earned a bronze.

Jananjoy was scheduled to compete again on Friday but had to withdraw due to an injury.

In table tennis, Assam paddler Priyanuj Bhattacharyya maintained his fine form and advanced to the boys’ U-18 singles final. On Friday, he played two matches, defeating an opponent from Bihar 3-0 in the quarterfinal and then overcoming Rajshekharan Muthu of Tamil Nadu by the same margin in the semifinal. With this victory Priyanuj ensured another medal in the competition. Earlier, he paired with Divyas Rajkowa Roy bagged a silver in boys doubles.

With Friday’s gold, Assam’s medal tally in this edition of the Khelo India Youth Games stands at five — three gold, one silver, and one bronze.
