GUWAHATI: The 5th All India Brahmaputra Open Squash Championship will kick off in Guwahati on April 18. The five-day event, organized by the Assam Squash Rackets Association (ASRA), will take place at the RG Baruah Sports Complex, with over 250 players from 22 states and international participants expected to compete. Shiladitya Dev, president of the Assam Squash Rackets Association, addressed the media, sharing details about the competition.
The championship will feature matches across five age categories: Under-11, Under-13, Under-15, Under-17, and Under-19, along with Men’s, Women’s, Men’s Over-35, and Men’s Over-50 events.
Prasanta Protim Kathkotia, chairman of the organizing committee, also spoke at the media briefing, highlighting the participation of top national stars, including Joshna Chinappa and Harinder Pal Singh. The competition will also see players from abroad, with representatives from Sri Lanka and Kenya joining the tournament.
This year’s competition has been upgraded to a four-star event by the Squash Rackets Federation of India, making it a significant draw for top players who will have the chance to earn valuable ranking points.
Regarding the prize money, Kathkotia said that the total purse for the competition will be around Rs 2.5 lakh. He also revealed that the Assam Squash Rackets Association is planning to host a high-level international squash event in the city soon.
Dev, speaking about the Assam team, mentioned that around 32 players from the state will compete in the championship. He also noted that there are a few local players with the potential to cause major upsets in the competition.
The media briefing was attended by several key officials from the Assam Squash Rackets Association, including Secretary Rakesh Tiwari, Treasurer Rajib Gupta, and sports organizer Kalyan Gogoi.
