GUWAHATI: The extended executive committee meeting of the Assam Athletic Association (AAA) was held in Tezpur on Sunday under the chairmanship of its president, Jayanta Mallabaruah. The meeting focused on key initiatives aimed at the overall development of athletics in the state.

One of the major announcements made during the meeting was the establishment of a proposed Athletics Academy at Nalbari. A total of 40 athletes—20 male and 20 female—will be selected to receive quality training at the academy. In addition, the AAA will soon set up a Centre of Excellence for athletics at the Sarusajai Sports Complex in Guwahati.

To promote grassroots-level participation, the association has also decided to organize Inter-Club Athletics Competitions in every district of Assam. The AAA will extend financial assistance to support these events.

The meeting was attended by key officials, including AAA Secretary Gitartha Goswami and Treasurer Ashoke Bharali. Former international athlete Tayabun Nessa was also present.

The executive committee took time to recognize and felicitate five athletes—Gitanjali Bora, Hamsira Rongpi, Nila Basumatari, Pokhila Ingtipi, and Chuni Barua Gogoi—who participated at various Masters Athletics Championships and brought laurels to the state.

In a special moment, President Jayanta Mallabaruah was also felicitated for his recent selection as Vice President of the Athletics Federation of India.
