Expecting good show from boxers in Khelo India: Hemanta Kalita

GUWAHATI: The secretary of the Assam Amateur Boxing Association Hemanta Kalita spoke to The Sentinel on different issues of the game. Here is the excerpt.

TS: How many boxers of Assam will be the part of the forthcoming Big Bout Indian Boxing League?

Many of our boxers belong to those weight categories which are not the part of this league. Only Pwilao Basumatary will be seen in action from Assam in the competition.

TS: There is news that Pwilao will represent NE teams in the coming league. Is it true?

Sorry. I am not the right person to give the reply of this question. You wait just a few hours. Details announcement is coming shortly.

TS: There is also news that promising boxers of the state Jamuna Boro is injured and needs urgent surgery.

Yes. It is true. She has to undergo surgery very soon and it would be happened by the next couple of days.

TS: What’s happened to her?

It is an old shoulder injury which was troubling the boxer for a while. Fix the problem through surgery is a good decision as she has a bright future ahead.

TS: When it comes to organize boxing event Guwahati always received letter marks. But it has learnt that the city is not among the venue of the Boxing League. Any specific reasons?

Yes. We too expect that the city would be selected as one of the venue. Possibly because of Khelo India Games we have missed the bus this time.

TS: How many teams will be the part of Boxing League?

All possible six franchisee-based teams will take part in the League and one of them will be from the North East.

TS: What about the star attraction...

Several top boxers from the globe will participate in the league for different teams. Among them will be our own Mary Kom and Amit Pangal.

TS: What are you expecting from Assam boxers in Khelo India?

We are expecting 10-15 medals from the Games this year. We are trying to inspire both boxers and coaches for the Games. Assam Amateur Boxing Association already announced cash incentive for the coaches and will give Rs 5000 for each medal.
