Guwahati City to Host International Rating Chess in October

GUWAHATI: 3rd Guwahati India Open International Chess Tournament will be held in the city from October 7. Around 400 players from India and abroad are expected to take part in the 6-day competition.

Addressing a media gathering the secretary of the organizing committee Biswajit Bharadwaj said, “The competition carrying a cash award of Rs 10 lakh. It will provide a platform to the budding talent of the state such as Shahil Dey Mrinmoy Rajkhowa, Mayank Chakraborty Dhrupad Kashyap and Manthan Kashyap Datta. We are expecting about 400 players across the world which included the USA, Chile, Belgium, Thailand, Philipinnes, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bangladesh, and India.”

GM Vasquez Schroeder Rodrigo of Chile is the top seed of the tournament. GM Sriram Jha of India and GM Ziatdinov Raset of USA have also confirmed their participation. Besides International Master (IM) Das Sayantan of West Bengal, Sidhant Mohapatra of Odisha, Dhulipalla Bala Chandra Prasad of Telengana, Koustav Chatterjee of Kolkata, Ramnathan Balasubramaniam of Tamil Nadu, Fide Master (FM) Habla Jony of Philippines and all the top players of Northeast India are also participating in the event.

Also the first International Rated Chess Player of the Northeast A.B Meetei of Manipur is also making a comeback to International Chess after about 25 years.

Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal will attend the inaugural function and will also inaugurate the tournament.

The president of the organizing committee Amitabh Basumatari also attended the media briefing. In his brief speech, Basumatari said, “ We have chalked out plans to promote the game. We also want to produce a Grand Master from Assam and that too within a very short time. “
