GUWAHATI: What began as a dream for Olympic bronze medallist Lovlina Borgohain has now become a reality.

The ace boxer officially launched her own boxing academy-the Lovlina Boxing Academy- in Barchandra, North Guwahati on Thursday — marking a major milestone in her journey from athlete to mentor.

Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma inaugurated the academy as chief guest and praised Lovlina’s initiative and her unwavering dedication to the sport throughout her career.

“The boxer brought immense glory to Assam and India with her Olympic medal, and this academy is a testament to her vision and commitment to grassroots development. It will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of boxing in our state,” said Dr. Sarma.

In support of Lovlina’s mission, the Assam government has pledged a grant of Rs 2 crore. The Chief Minister also assured further assistance, including land acquisition and funding for hostel construction, coaching staff, and future expansion.

The academy is equipped with a full-sized boxing ring, a state-of-the-art gym, and essential training infrastructure.

Reflecting on the academy’s humble beginnings, Lovlina shared, “After the 2024 Olympics, I finally had some time. I bought this plot in 2021, and I wanted to build something meaningful — even if on a basic level. So with whatever funds I had, I set up a quality ring, some punching bags, and a gym. It was about giving kids a place to start.”

Lovlina’s vision for the academy is rooted in empowerment and long-term excellence. “I want to create a platform at the grassroots level where youth can chase their dreams. My initial goal is to produce boxers who can compete at national and international levels by 2028,” she added.

The academy will charge a nominal fee of Rs 500 per month to ensure training remains affordable. It is open to new students and organizes them into three age categories: 8–12 years, 13–18 years, and 18 and above.

The inaugural ceremony was also attended by several dignitaries, including Sports and Youth Welfare Minister Nandita Gorlosa, MLA Diganta Kalita, and DGP Harmeet Singh. A host of current and former boxers, coaches, and sports officials were also attended the event.
