IPL betting in Dhubri: Bookies arrested

DHUBRI: Two recent raids against IPL betting, including one on Tuesday night, by police in Dhubri district has exposed a betting link in major cities and towns of the country.

On the basis of secret information on IPL betting going on at the residence of one Subrata Talukdar of Chaimain Road in Ward No. 3 of Dhubri town, raid was conducted by Dhubri Police led by Dhubri Deputy Superintendent of Police Sp (HQ), Trinayan Bhuyan on Tuesday night. A police source informed that in the raid, several copies containing records and accounts of IPL betting, 14 mobile handsets used for betting, one calculator and one LED TV were seized along with other betting-related documents.

IPL bookie Rajendra Prasad of Thana Road was arrested. However, the owner of the house, Subrata Talukdar and other associates managed to flee from the spot and other places of the town, source further informed.

Earlier on March 29, a raid was also conducted by Dhubri Police led by Trinayan Bhuyan and two IPL bookies, namely Noor Ali and Shaminur Haque, both of Adabari Choumore, were caught red-handed and copies containing records of betting, mobile phones and other items used in betting were seized. Later, both were forwarded to judicial custody.

Talking to The Sentinel, Dhubri Deputy Superintendent of Police Sp (HQ), Trinayan Bhuyan said that investigation of both the cases was going on and hunt was on to nab all the bookies, either active or sleeping, who were part of this racket.

“We have set up our own intelligence networks in and around the Dhubri district and we are getting inputs of betting regularly, so now there is little chance for bookies to escape from the clutches of the police. All bookies will soon land up in jail,” he said. As many as six persons committed suicide after losing everything in IPL betting in the last three years in Dhubri district, including one last week.
