GUWAHATI: Cricketing may return to the Nehru Stadium once again.

The Board of Sports, Assam, custodian of the stadium, is planning to revive the cricket facilities at the stadium in collaboration with the Assam Cricket Association.

A meeting was held in this regard today with State Sports Commissioner and Secretary Moloy Bora in the chair to prepare a road map for bringing cricket activities back into the Nehru Stadium. The meeting was also attended by Director of Sports and Youth Welfare Dharmakanta Mili, top officials of the Assam Cricket Association, including president Romen Dutta and secretary Devajit Saikia; secretary of Gauhati Sports Association DhruvaJyoti Kalita; vice president of the Assam Olympic Association Bishnuram Nunisa and treasurer of the Assam Football Association Hiren Gogoi.

In the meeting, after a threadbare discussion, it was decided that ACA will take the responsibility of laying 4-5 centre cricket wickets and also develop the playground of Nehru Stadium which will provide 1 cricket ground and 2 football turfs.

The secretary of Gauhati Sports Association Dhruvajyoti Kalita later told The Sentinel, "We also want that cricket should return to Nehru stadium as due to lack of grounds the Gauhati Sports Association is facing a lot of problems to organize various championships." A few months back, the Assam Cricket Association appealed to the Board of Sports and the Chief Minister to revive the cricket infrastructure and cricket at Nehru Stadium, which was once the main ground for the game till 2014. It was in 2014 cricketing activities were suspended at Nehru Stadium for the renovation of the ground for the SAF Games.
