GUWAHATI: The Chief Minister Cup 2nd Guwahati Smart City International FIDE Rating Chess Tournament 2025 got under way at the Bhogeswar Baruah Sports Complex in the city on Monday.
The tournament was inaugurated by Nandita Gorlosa, Sports and Youth Welfare Minister of Assam. Also present at the opening ceremony were renowned swimmer Elvish Ali Hazarika, Ankur Bharali, Director of Sports and Youth Welfare Department and Mukuta Deka, President, All Assam Chess Association.
Altogether 295 players from various states of India - including Delhi, Punjab, Maharashtra, Bihar, West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Tripura, and Assam are participating in the event. Two players from the neighboring country, Nepal, are also competing in the tournament.
International Master Mayank Chakraborty of Assam is the top seed, while International Master Koustuv Kundu from West Bengal is the second seed of the tournament.
In the first round, both Mayank Chakraborty and Koustuv Kundu registered comfortable victories against Aishani Duseja and Mridusman Kashyap, respectively.
