GUWAHATI: A stunning hat-trick from Nicodim Narzary powered Global FC to a dramatic 3-2 victory over defending champions OILFC in a thrilling five-goal affair in the 70th Bordoloi Trophy (Final round) tie at the Judges Field on Wednesday. The win took Gloabal FC in the quarterfinals.
Despite being the favorites with five previous titles to their name, OILFC found themselves stunned by a spirited performance from the underdogs, Global FC, who were determined to make an impact with limited resources. The match saw a standout performance from Nicodim, a former ASEBSC player, who was relentless in his attack and kept the OILFC defense on edge throughout the game.
The first goal came in the 17th minute when Nicodim took advantage of a defensive lapse from OILFC, putting Global FC ahead. In the 43rd minute, Nicodim doubled his tally with a brilliant free-kick from outside the box. His shot struck the crossbar before finding the back of the net, leaving OILFC stunned. In response, OILFC made three substitutions before the break, a move that seemed to inject some life into their game.
In the second half, OILFC improved significantly, and Tupu Brahma pulled one back for them in the 50th minute. The defending champions pushed for an equalizer, but Global FC’s goalkeeper, Raidao Brahma, was in exceptional form, making a series of crucial saves to keep his side ahead.
Nicodim then sealed his hat-trick in stunning style. Against the flow of play, he unleashed a powerful volley from the edge of the box, leaving OILFC’s goalkeeper with no chance. It was a strike that will surely be remembered as one of the standout goals in this edition of the competition.
OILFC scored their final goal in the match capitalizing a spot kick after Global FC was penalized inside the box. Tupu Brahma stepped up to take the spot-kick, but Raidao Brahma made an impressive save, diving to his right. The rebound fell to Tupu, who fired again, but Raidao managed to partially block the shot. On his third attempt, however, Tupu found the net, reducing the deficit to 3-2 with just three minutes remaining.
The other match of the day saw a lackluster encounter between Trinayan Gosthi and Dubi Sports Association.. The tie was decided by a penalty shootout after the schedule time ended 1-1 draw. Dubi FC triumphed 4-2 to secure their place in the next round. Trinayan Gosthi took the lead in the 39th minute through a goal by Lakhya Jyoti Das. Dubi Sports Association responded quickly, with Adarsh Rai Das scoring the equalizer just two minutes later, bringing the game level at 1-1.
