GUWAHATI: Sports and Youth Welfare Minister Bimal Borah today visited the proposed Sualkuchi Multipurpose Stadium and reviewed the construction work. The stadium is expected to be ready by January next year.

It will be the first multipurpose stadium in the Rural Kamrup District and will have facilities of both indoor and outdoor games. The work for an eight lanes synthetic track, football ground, indoor stadium and a sports hostel is going on at present. A swimming pool is also included in the plan which work will start soon.

The total cost of the entire complex is around Rs 27 cr and the work was started in October 2019.

Talking to the media persons after reviewing the construction work Borah said, "More than 60 percent of the work is completed till date. We are trying to finish the entire work by January, 2022. Once the construction is completed the stadium will be able to produce more international standard athletes from this area."

Several top officials of Sports and Youth Welfare Department-Malay Bora (Commissioner and Secretary), Ranuj Borkotoky (Joint Secretary), Pabitraram Khound (Director) were present in the function along with several former international and national sports persons including footballer Debashish Roy, Gilbertson Sangma, swimmer Elvis Ali Hazarika, cricketer Zaved Zaman, kho kho player Rupa Thakuria and veteran sports organizer Premadhar Sarma.
